School History:
The first primary school at Dingli was founded in 1858 with a population of only 30 girls using the premises of the Parish Domus. The first school headmistress was Ms. Carmela Bonello. In 1875 the school took in the first 10 boys. These children were taught Maltese, English, Arithmetic and Catechism. The girls were also taught needlework.
In 1903, the school moved to 17, Main Street, occupying premises which were newly-built for this purpose. These first 8 classrooms are still being used to date. During the same year (1903), Mr Ġuże’ Ebejer was appointed Headteacher and he held this position for 35 fruitful years. Thus, he earned the honour of having this village school called after him till the creation of St. Nicholas College in 2008. In the early 1960′s, a new wing housing 12 more classrooms and a multipurpose hall were built. Before being amalgamated with the primary school, for a number of years the newly-built block was used as an Area Secondary School, first for for girls and later for boys . In 1975 the first kindergarten class was opened with 25 children. Presently this section caters for two kindergarten 1 classes and two kindergarten 2 classes with a total population of about 57 children. Nowadays Dingli Primary School caters for 7 primary classes and 4 kindergarten classes. Besides, there are specialised classrooms for Complementary Education, Art, Music, Drama, P.S.C.D. and Science. Apart from these classrooms, nowadays the multipurpose hall is being used daily for morning assemblies and; occasionally, for functions such as the monthly mass and the annual Celebration Day. |
