Nicholas was born in c. 280 A.D. of wealthy parents who raised him to be a devout Christian. While still young, Nicholas lost both of his parents in an epidemic. Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick and the suffering. He dedicated his whole life to serve God and was made bishop of Myra, a city that is now known as Demre in Turkey. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.
St. Nicholas is believed to have died on 6th December, 343 A.D.. After his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. St. Nicholas transformed into the legendary character called Santa Claus, who brings Christmas presents to children around the world.

Another legend says that three male students were travelling to Athens, the capital of Greece. On their way, a wicked man murdered them and put their remains in a picking tub. For his doings, St. Nicholas earned the name of the protector of children.
