It is recommended that young primary students use backpacks so that the weight of the load is distributed among some of the body's strongest muscles and thus avoid injury to muscles and joints. Backpacks should have the following features:
The backpack should be divided into compartments and the straps buckled tightly with the heavy books closest to the centre of the bag. When carrying a backpack, bending should be done by using both knees, not over the waist. Wheel carriers are not allowed as these constitute hazard to students during transportation, especially up and down stairs/buses and tend to be excessively heavy even when empty. One strap bags and 1 strap carrying style bags are to be avoided. Ideally, the weight of the schoolbag and contents should not exceed 10% of the child's body weight. The weight of the bag should definitely never exceed 20% of the child's total body weight. |
Ways to reduce the school bag burden:
- Encourage then to leave some books at school under the desk|table or in the locker.
- While buying your child's bag, choose one with a broad and firm base, padded shoulder straps and compartments.
- Teach your child to carry to school only what is essential. Older children may follow a timetable.
- Always make sure that your child carries lightweight accessories.
- Teach your kids to pack their bag with heavier books at the bottom and lighter items on top.
- Teach your child to put down the bag whenever he| she can as while waiting for the school bus or before the school morning assembly.
- If your child leans forward while carrying the bag, that is an indication that the bag is either too heavy or has been packed incorrectly.
